Grow A Colony Food and Water Guide

Keep Food returning through Workers, refill the Queen's Water, diagnose stalled routes, and know when the colony can afford combat units.

Food is the colony’s production resource, and Workers are the unit officially assigned to obtain it. Water is a separate Queen meter in current community gameplay. Fixing one does not automatically fix the other: a stocked nest can still leave the Queen unable to travel, while a full Water meter cannot pay for eggs. Read both before expanding.

Prove one Worker round trip

Select a single Worker or stand where you can distinguish one from the group. Use Scavenge and watch it leave the nest, reach a Food source, collect, turn around, and return. Do not judge production from the outbound movement alone. The resource becomes useful only after the delivery completes.

Keep the first route short and visible. A nearby source with a clean entrance is more valuable for diagnosis than a distant, richer-looking target. Once the unit repeats the trip without intervention, add another Worker or extend the route gradually.

Update 5.4 says pathfinding should now work correctly, so begin with route and order checks rather than assuming a known server-wide bug. If every simple route still fails, rejoin a fresh server and reproduce the shortest test before spending more Food.

Keep a reserve before adding fighters

Majors and Drones are for fighting, but they consume resources that could extend production. The correct reserve is not a permanent number; egg prices, caps, and upgrades can change. Use a behavioral threshold: Food should rise again after the last purchase, and at least one Worker route should continue while fighters are away.

If Food never recovers, stop buying. Add or redirect Workers, shorten the route, or reduce simultaneous combat orders. If Food rises consistently and a threat blocks access, a fighter becomes a productive expense because it protects or opens the next route.

Refill the Queen’s Water

Current screenshot-backed reporting shows a Water meter near the Queen’s status and a drinking interaction at a source such as the oasis. Travel before the meter becomes an emergency, approach until the prompt appears, and hold or press the displayed interaction. Wait for the refill feedback or visible meter change before leaving.

Plan Water as part of the route. Refill before scouting a distant target, following units across the map, or joining colony combat. A low meter can force an early retreat and make an otherwise sound Food or battle test look unsuccessful.

Exact capacity, drain rate, and whether every colony or map uses the same source remain update-sensitive. Use the live meter rather than a fixed timer. If the source does not respond, reposition until the correct prompt is selected and check that another interaction is not taking focus.

Separate source, transport, and spending problems

A colony can be near Food but still have a transport problem. It can receive deliveries but overspend on eggs. It can have a good reserve while the Queen runs out of Water. Label the problem before changing the colony.

For a source problem, choose another visible resource. For transport, repair the path and commands. For spending, pause eggs until the store rebuilds. For Water, route the Queen to a refill point without pulling every Worker away. Solving the correct layer preserves the progress already working.

Safe expansion routine

  1. Watch two clean Worker returns from the current nest.
  2. Check the Queen’s Water and refill before moving far.
  3. Use Follow only for units that need to move with the Queen.
  4. Clear or avoid the next threat with Majors and Drones.
  5. Move one boundary rather than relocating everything at once.
  6. Reissue Scavenge and watch the new complete return path.
  7. Spend only after the Food balance begins recovering again.

This routine makes expansion measurable. If the new area fails, move back one boundary and compare. Do not add more Workers to an unproven route merely because their egg card is available.

Common resource mistakes

Leaving Follow on can pull Workers off an established source. Leaving Attack on can redirect units toward a creature while you are trying to test collection. Building at the entrance can block the only return lane. Spending the last Food on a fighter can make a small loss impossible to replace.

Another mistake is following exact values from an older recording. A current guide notes that visible egg cost can change during play, and another publishes a fixed snapshot. Read your server’s price and use this guide’s route logic. The role of a Worker is stable; a displayed number may not be.

When the resource loop is healthy

The Food loop is healthy when at least one Worker repeatedly completes the return, the store recovers after a purchase, and combat orders do not stop every delivery. The Water loop is healthy when the Queen can reach a known refill point before a long trip and confirm the meter change.

Next, use the Workers Guide to improve task assignment, the Nest Building Guide to remove entrance problems, or the Points Guide to decide when stable play should turn into unlock progress.

Sources and confidence

Workers gathering Food is Official. Water prompts, source examples, and detailed path diagnosis are Community corroborated/reported from current gameplay guides checked August 28, 2026; exact rates and capacities still need current in-game testing.
