Grow A Colony Beginner Guide

Build your first Grow A Colony nest, establish a Worker Food route, refill Water, add fighters, and avoid the most common opening stalls.

The safest Grow A Colony opening is to build a working economy before an army. Start with the free colony option shown in your selector, go to the marked dig area, make a deep enough chamber for eggs, and create a Worker. Do not spend again until you have watched that Worker reach Food and return it to the nest. Once that loop repeats, maintain the Queen’s Water and add a Major or Drone only when a threat blocks your route.

Start at the colony selector

Current community walkthroughs identify Black Ant as the free starter. Select the option that your live menu marks as free; do not spend Robux or Points just to learn the basic loop. The starter can teach nesting, Food collection, unit commands, Water, and combat without locking the run behind a purchase.

After spawning as the Queen, look for the green dig marker. Walk to that location before attempting eggs. A screenshot-backed current guide shows a desert start and a DIG HERE marker, but map presentation can change. The reliable signal is the live marker or tutorial prompt attached to your Queen.

Dig a usable first chamber

Use the interaction shown at the marker and continue downward until egg laying is accepted. If the game says that you are not deep enough, it is reporting a location requirement, not necessarily a Food shortage. Keep digging, move the Queen fully into the chamber, and try the egg action again.

Make the entrance wide and the first chamber simple. You need to see whether ants can pass the Queen, turn around, and leave for resources. A cramped decorative tunnel makes it hard to distinguish bad orders from bad geometry. Leave expansion room behind or beside the Queen instead of putting every egg at the doorway.

Community reporting also shows an early Shed Wings interaction that can supply starting Food. Because the exact reward and prompt can change, read the current text before using it. Treat it as an opening option, not as a repeatable income source.

Create the first Worker and prove the route

Roblox’s official description confirms that Workers are for Food. Select the Worker Egg entry shown in your interface, pay the live cost, and wait for the unit to appear. Current sources disagree about fixed egg hotkeys, so follow the on-screen Worker label instead of memorizing a letter from an older screenshot.

Use Scavenge and follow one Worker. Watch four events in order: it leaves the nest, reaches a source, picks up or registers Food, and returns to the colony. Only the complete round trip proves the economy is working. If the Worker stops, do not buy three more and send them into the same blockage.

Repair the first failed segment. Clear the nest entrance if the unit cannot leave. Reissue Scavenge if it follows the Queen instead of targeting Food. Move the Queen or approach a nearer source if the return route is too long or obstructed. Update 5.4 advertises a pathfinding fix, but reselecting the unit and issuing one clean order remains a practical recovery step.

Maintain Food and Water separately

Food pays for colony growth; Water is a Queen survival resource in current community gameplay. Do not confuse a full Food store with a safe expedition. Check the Water meter before leaving the nest, then identify a reachable source and use the displayed interaction until the refill response appears.

Bank enough Food that one new egg does not collapse the next production cycle. Exact prices are not treated as permanent here because current sources show conflicting values or changing costs. The decision rule survives those changes: add economic capacity while deliveries are weak, and add combat capacity only after deliveries repeat.

Add Majors and Drones for a reason

The official experience description assigns both Majors and Drones to fighting. Add one when a hostile Bug Creature, another colony, or a dangerous route makes a Worker-only colony too vulnerable. Use Follow to gather the group, move on a readable path, and use Attack only when you have selected a target you intend to engage.

Keep at least one reliable Food route active while fighting. Pulling every unit away from production can create a delayed failure: the battle ends, but there is no Food for replacements or expansion. If you cannot observe both the fight and the route, shorten the expedition or return to the nest between targets.

Do not call either fighter “best” from its name. The public description does not provide damage, health, speed, cost, or AI rules. Compare them in the same current server, against the same type of threat, and choose the one that solves the colony’s present weakness.

Opening checklist

  1. Confirm the experience is by sebcaddy1 and start with the free colony shown in the selector.
  2. Reach the marked dig area and make a chamber deep enough for the egg action.
  3. Create one Worker using the visible Worker Egg entry.
  4. Turn on Scavenge and watch one full source-to-nest return.
  5. Clear the entrance or reissue the order if the round trip breaks.
  6. Check and refill the Queen’s Water before a long trip.
  7. Repeat Food deliveries before spending on combat.
  8. Add a Major or Drone when a real threat blocks the next useful route.
  9. Regroup with Follow, attack deliberately, and keep the Queen out of a blind approach.
  10. Use Points and colony unlocks only after the basic loop is stable.

Common beginner mistakes

Trying to lay eggs on the surface wastes time when the depth gate is still active. Creating several fighters before Food returns leaves the colony unable to replace losses. Leaving Attack enabled while trying to move can pull units into a target you only meant to pass. Expanding a tunnel and issuing new orders at the same time makes a path problem harder to locate.

The clean recovery is to simplify. Return near the nest, turn off the order that is causing movement, select a small group, and prove one route. Refill Water, restore Food, then resume expansion. A small colony with a readable loop is easier to grow than a crowded one with no clear job assignments.

Where to go next

Use Controls for the live prompt and Follow/Scavenge/Attack workflow. Open Food and Water when a Worker or Queen resource stalls. Use Nest Building if the shallow warning returns. When the opening is stable, compare Workers, Majors, and Drones before spending your next Food.

Sources and confidence

The Worker/Food and Major/Drone combat split is Official in the current Roblox description. The starter, digging route, Water behavior, and exact UI operations are Community reported from current screenshot-backed and independent gameplay guides checked August 28, 2026.
