Grow A Colony Majors Guide

Use Majors as Grow A Colony fighting units, stage them without starving the nest, test live performance, and recover from bad attack orders.

Majors are one of the two units the developer identifies for fighting. Use them after Workers have established Food and when a Bug Creature, rival colony, or exposed entrance creates a real combat need. The public description does not publish Major damage, health, speed, cost, target logic, or an advantage over Drones, so judge the live unit by controlled fights rather than a permanent tier label.

Prepare before laying a Major Egg

Confirm that a Worker route still returns Food and that the purchase will not leave the nest unable to recover. Read the current Major Egg cost and cap from the interface. Current guides disagree on fixed egg keys, so select the Major label shown in your server.

Choose the Major’s first job before spawning it: entrance defense, escort for a resource route, or an attack on a specific obstruction. A unit without an assigned job often gets dragged between Follow and Attack while the Queen exposes the nest.

Stage with Follow, commit with Attack

Use Follow to gather the Major near the Queen and move to ground where the target, Worker route, and retreat line are visible. Wait for the unit to arrive before issuing Attack. If the target is close to the nest, keep the fight outside the traffic lane so Workers can continue moving.

Use Attack on the chosen target, then watch whether the Major reaches it, stays engaged, survives, and returns when regrouped. Turn off the aggressive order after the objective so the unit does not chase a second target out of sight.

Use Majors for colony problems, not vanity

A Major is useful when it clears or deters a threat that stops production, protects the Queen during an unavoidable approach, or creates enough safety to expand. It is less useful when Food is already stalled for path reasons, when the target can simply be avoided, or when the purchase prevents replacement Workers.

Do not infer that “Major” means a specific biological soldier class or heavy labor role. Only the in-game result and current labels define this unit. Community sources sometimes attach extra descriptions, but the stable confirmed statement is fighting.

Test Major performance fairly

Record the displayed cost, current skills, colony type, target, distance, and number of supporting units. Compare with a Drone only in the same server and against a similar target. A result from a different colony, Skill Tree setup, or Game Pass state is not a fair unit comparison.

Useful observations include time to reach and engage, survival after the fight, how reliably Follow recalls it, and whether the Worker route stayed active. Those measures answer a player’s decision better than an unsupported damage number.

Protect the nest while Majors travel

Do not send every fighter away with the Queen. Leave enough coverage to prevent a hostile target from reaching the chamber uncontested. Keep the entrance open so a returning group does not collide with Workers. If the Queen must lead the attack, refill Water and move in short stages rather than crossing the map with no retreat.

When another colony is nearby, treat the first engagement as reconnaissance. Commit a small group, observe targeting and consequences, and regroup. Current public evidence confirms that Colonies can be defeated but does not establish universal PvP protection, loss, or reward rules.

Recover from a Major that will not respond

Cancel Attack, reselect a small group, and use Follow from a nearby clear position. If it remains stuck, simplify the route rather than adding another Major. If it attacks an unintended target, move away, turn the aggressive order off, and regain formation before approaching again.

If the unit disappears or dies, check the current game’s replacement and respawn behavior before spending. No permanent death rule is asserted here. Reproduce the same controlled encounter only if the Food reserve can absorb the loss.

Major decision checklist

  1. Is Food returning after the last purchase?
  2. What exact threat or defense lane needs a fighter?
  3. What does the live Major Egg cost and cap show?
  4. Can the Queen stage the group with a safe retreat?
  5. Will Workers remain assigned to Food during the fight?
  6. Can Attack be canceled and Follow recall the Major?
  7. Did the result improve access, defense, or production?

Use Drones to evaluate the other official combat unit or the three-way comparison to choose from the full colony job list.
